Police rescued and then arrested the suspect who was charged with breaking into four vehicles, East Brunswick police said.
Altogether, three suspects were arrested for breaking into vehicles.
On Wednesday, Feb. 21, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the East Brunswick Police Department was notified of suspects breaking into vehicles at the Neilson Plaza Parking Deck, 7 Tower Center Boulevard.
One of the suspects surrendered while another fled on foot northbound on Tower Center Boulevard, resulting in a foot pursuit. The suspect was pursued northbound on Tower Center Boulevard, at which time they entered Westons Mill Pond in an attempt to get away. The suspect was observed discarding items from his pockets while struggling to stay afloat in the cold water, police said.
A third suspect was located inside the Hilton Hotel and was taken into custody without incident.
A follow-up investigation revealed that four vehicles had been burglarized by the suspects. Three of the vehicles had windows broken to gain entry, and the fourth vehicle was found to be unlocked.
- Keith E. Toney, 42, from New Brunswick, was charged with burglary and other offenses.
- Demetrius W. Richardson, 44, from Highland Park, was charged with burglary, resisting arrest and other offenses. he was rescued by police in the pond before suffering from hypothermia, police said.
- Jessica L. Andrews, 36, from Flemington, was charged with burglary.
All three suspects were subsequently taken to Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center.
The incident remains under investigation, which may result in additional charges.
